While I give credit to BYU for a great game plan and the BYU QB for reading the OU defense so well. I don't understand OU's Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson and where he got his game plan. Obviously he thought we would have no trouble with BYU. He ran the ball for almost the entire 1st half. Instead of using Demarco Murray who is the best running back despite OU coaches thinking Chris Brown is, Kevin's play calling was like OU was way ahead. He played Jermie Calhoun, Mosis Madu, Chris Brown, and Murray got a few carries. You would of thought OU was comfortably ahead and OU was letting all the subs play. Meanwhile the Heisman Trophy winner was only getting to pass a couple of times. When Sam did complete one, Corey Brandon who had beat Stephen Good out for starting offensive tackle either jumped offsides or held someone to get the gain of yards taken back and it would be 1st or 2nd down 24 to go. The offensive perfomance was not good, as I feared Adron Tennell is brick hands still, when he is wide open he can catch the ball, but get him in traffic and he drops it everytime. I do not understand why the coaches did not make adjustments like adjust to the blitz by the linebacker. The Linebacker for BYU made the same kind of blitz all night.
Here is the picture to the left you see that highlighted in yellow that the right offensive tackle has no one to block and the running back is going out for a pass. While in in highlighted in red, Sam is getting ready to get hit by the blitzing linebacker who is running through the whole in the left side of the line to slam Sam Bradford to the turf. The Left side offensive lineman were blocking people so there was nobody left on that side to block the the blitzing linebacker. No adjustments were made to stop this blitz until Sam Bradford was hurt and out of the game. In fact the last couple of drives in the 4th Quarter were the only time they adjusted to stop this. As you see in the Picture below if you keep a running back highlighted in yellow in to block that would have stopped that kind of blitz before Sam Bradford got hurt. That is one of my gripes with these coaches for OU. Yes they are great Coaches but they do not adjust the game plan during the game. They stick with what ever they came up with to the bitter end. It was obvious what to do to stop this blitz why didn't the coaches for OU adjust sooner. On Defense, Dominique Franks starting corner for OU played horrible losing his mind and letting two key long passes go to wide open BYU receivers. One of the those passes scored the winning touchdown for BYU. Another gripe if Jimmy Stevens (53 yards) who had kicked the longest field goal this year (53 yards) during practice was the starting field goal kicker why did they go with Tress Way to try a 54 yarder, when he was beat out of the job by Jimmy Stevens. Okay my gripes are over for now. On the bright side (is there one ha!) looks like Landry Jones did a pretty good job after he was thrown in as QB after Sam was hurt. Let us all pray that Sam and Jermain Gresham will heal quickly and the coaches will adjust the game plan to fit this years offense not last years.
